This was a very helpful course. Everybody planning on designing, specifying or installing gas fireplaces should take this course. Very well done! Thanks. Gerald O'Brien

Hello Vivian: The exam codeword is on a random page within the course PDF. If you can't find it, you can try the Adobe Reader search tool (Hit ESC to exit fullscreen, press F8 to restore toolbar, then select the search tool.) Simply search for "word", and the correct page will appear in the results. If you still cannot find the codeword, please send me an email with the full course title to: info@aecdaily.com. I will look up the codeword and email it to you.

Question

I have a direct vent fireplace like the one shown in the diagram. If it's sealed combustion, why can I feel a draft coming out of the grill near the bottom on cold, windy days.

The draft you feel is the result of either a poorly insulated chase or else you need to fill the opening around the gas line where it is coming through the chase. If those areas are sealed better, you should not feel a draft.

I have a DV fireplace I am putting in. We have the chimney side opened up for installation, so I am getting lots of cold air coming in from the bottom of the unit. I couldn't find in the Heatilator manual what the clearances were on the bottom of the unit, unless they are the same 1/2" that it is on the top of the unit. That still will leave a 1/2" gap that cold air can get into the bottom of the unit with and create a draft. Can I use fireblock rated foam and seal up the holes in the very bottom of the unit around the gas and electrical lines and whatever else may be slightly open. I did notice it came with some insulation that I would assume goes around the gas pipe. Is that safe to use? My other thought is to frame around the whole unit with wood and cover it with foamboard, maintaining the clearances, sealing the foamboard to the ground and corners. That way even if cold air is in and around the chimney, not much is going to get through the opening around the dv pipe. This chimney/fireplace has been so drafty that I am going to do whatever I can to stop it.

On the cover of your installation instructions you will see this warning... WARNING: If the information in these instructions is not followed exactly, a fire or explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury, or death. Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier.” At the bottom of the cover page, you will see this direction “Installation and service of this appliance should be performed by qualified personnel. Hearth & Home Technologies suggests NFI certified or factory trained professionals, or technicians supervised by an NFI certified professional.” Please do not attempt to install this product without a qualified installer. Your first resource for a qualified installer may be the supplier who sold you the product. Otherwise find a Heatilator dealer at www.Heatilator.com. This is a job best left to professionals.
