Name: Charles Spitznagel
Title: Sales Manager, Cathedral Stone Products
Background: Charles Spitznagel is a second generation brick and stone mason who served his apprenticeship in Maryland, working for his father’s bricklaying crews as a laborer and later becoming a full-fledged mason by the time he was twenty-one. At that time the family moved to Ottawa, Canada, and began brick and stone contracting there. Because of the working conditions in the extreme cold, Charles took courses offered by the Canadian Masonry Institute to learn how to properly work with masonry, mortars, etc., in sub zero temperatures. One year after moving to Canada, in 1982, Charles’s father died, and at the age of twenty-two, he was suddenly the head of the business. Since then, he has continued to grow the business and has gained a reputation for the best masonry work in the area, and is in constant demand.
In 1998, aware of the work being done in the masonry restoration field by Cathedral Stone Products, and having family in the area, Charles began discussion of the possibility of working with Cathedral Stone. After two years of dialogue, Charles became a project manager for Cathedral Stone in March of 2001, specializing in historic masonry restoration and maintenance. He brings the highest level of good masonry practices to Cathedral Stone Products, and is their head trainer for the United States. His other duties include management of CSP restoration projects, supervision of crews, and on site investigations of masonry problems.
