Specifying Levels of Finish for Gypsum Wallboard
Posted by: on 2009-12-31 10:14

Hi, I enjoyed the course, I have two questions: IN WET CONDITIONS, USE GLASS MAT FINISH WALLBOARD OR WONDERBOARD? ARE THERE SPECIAL PRIMERS THAT CAN BE USED INSTEAD OF SKIM COATING? Thanks, Jeff Jordan jmjord@rcn.com

1. In wet conditions (shower stalls, tubs, etc), the product that should be used is DensShield Tilebacker. It installs 50% faster than Wonderboard, and does not scratch or damage the fixtures like Wonderboard. DensShield also has a "build-in" moisture barrier that keeps water from penetrating the wall cavity. See attached for more information. 2. To your priming question, for best finishing results for our fiberglass faced DensArmor Plus interior wallboard, we recommend a high-solids primer to create a smooth finishing surface. Thanks for the refresher course on this issue. I have a few observations and questions: 1. SLIDE 7: Your text denotes gypsum as CaSO4*1/2"H2O. Yet your image title correctly states: CaSO4*2H2O. Please revise. 2. SLIDE 14: Under the Durability section you state "Wont't wick moisture and lose strenghth". Define wick. Is it to denote the drawing of liquid through the material? 3. SLIDE 45: Same comment as slide 7.

Thanks for your interest in G-P Gypsum products and training. Will have AEC Daily make the corrections on Slide 7 and 45. Wicking is defined as the ability to draw moisture into a material. DensArmor Plus has a moisture resistant core, and resists wicking. Sincerely, Dave Brewster G-P Gypsum LLC
