AEC305 - Patient Room Design for Bariatric & Obese Populations...THIS COURSE IS NO LONGER OFFERED

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss the causes for the increasing obese patient population in the U.S. and the impact treating this population has on the design of facilities and delivery of healthcare.
- Identify the specialized healthcare equipment needed for treating and handling bariatric patient populations to ensure successful patient outcomes during their healthcare experience.
- Recognize the safety risks, to both the patient and the caregiver, associated with treating bariatric patients; and take ergonomics into consideration when specifying furniture and equipment for bariatric patient rooms.
- Examine how bariatric equipment and care giving needs impact patient room and bathroom design, square footage requirements, and layout considerations.

Name: Dennis Gallant
Title: Global Patient Environment Portfolio Director, Hill-Rom, Inc.
Background: Dennis Gallant has served the healthcare industry for the past 35 years as a lead product and patient room designer developing innovative products and programs for the Hill-Rom Company. He lead Hill-Rom's "Patient Room of the Future" research initiative, which was designed to identify next generation user trends, technologies, and design innovations for hospitals of the future.
He helped launch Hill-Rom's professional design services group that provides programs that assist hospitals and design professionals rapidly create innovative patient environments through a caregiver based CAD design process and hands on, rapid mock-up techniques. Dennis has participated on a number of industry advisory panels including the Advisory Board Company and SCCM, and published articles on acuity adaptable room design. He has led a number of patient room research initiatives including an evidence based design study in partnership with Banner Health and the Center for Health Design.
Dennis has been awarded over 50 U.S. patents for medical devices and patient room equipment including hospital beds, furniture, and architectural products. He is currently serving as Hill-Rom’s Global Patient Environment Portfolio Director responsible for identifying and bringing to market next generation patient room architectural and furniture products.
