Description: Current trends in architecture include the desire to reintroduce traditional articulated detailing concepts in a modern way. However, details that once were relatively straightforward to construct in mass masonry walls do not translate directly to contemporary anchored veneer construction. This course discusses the various aesthetic, weatherproofing, and structural characteristics that can be incorporated into anchored brick veneer, the limits of the prescriptive methods presented in the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (TMS 402), and general detailing concepts to adapt these types of details to meet the safety requirements for anchored brick veneer integrity and attachment to the structure.

Title: Managing Senior Engineer, The Brick Industry Association
Cortney currently serves as Managing Senior Engineer in the Engineering & Research Department of the Brick Industry Association (BIA) where she develops technical documents and participates in codes and standards activities, as well as answering technical questions from architects, engineers, owners, and contractors. Prior to joining BIA in 2017, Cortney worked as a forensic consulting engineer for over 15 years, investigating and repairing various types of architectural and structural problems in existing buildings with a focus on masonry of all types, ranging from historic brick mass masonry to modern brick cavity and veneer wall construction. In addition to brick masonry, her projects involved materials such as structural clay tile, dimension stone, concrete, steel, and wood/timber, with these other materials typically occurring in combination with brick masonry.
