A Review of Design Guidelines and Lighting for Behavioral Health Applications

Approximately 1 hour

Behavioral Health facilities present a wide spectrum of unique design requirements to support patient care. Inpatient and outpatient applications must provide not only task specific light levels and security, but also insure that patients and staff are kept safe from harm. Classifying the type of care and level of supervision a patient needs is not only crucial to determining the overall construction of the facility, but also the construction and features required of lighting in those spaces. Learning to use current reference materials and apply industry guidelines to the design of behavioral spaces is key. We will discuss the resources currently available and how to apply these to behavioral design. Differences between supervised / lower security and unsupervised / high security areas can be accommodated to provide protection and take into consideration aesthetics. Trends in fixture and lighting design are progressing quickly to offer designers more options while feeling secure in their choices. We will explore lighting and controls products that can make patients feel less segregated from the general population and help to avoid the look and feel of the institution of the past. Support of wellness for patients and staff can also be accomplished with new technologies such as tunable and selectable white for Circadian Support and Human Centric lighting. Integrated lighting controls can now function as asset tracking, provide security and "geo-fencing" among other options. A basic overview of some of those options will be provided.
