FA14 Métis Design: An (In)Formally Canadian Approach to Architectural Thinking

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

In 2008, John Ralston Saul described Canada as a "Métis civilization" whose values and attributes are deeply linked to our aboriginal heritage and the cultural negotiation between our First Nations and European ancestry.  If Saul's provocation is considered in relation to discussions surrounding our national architectural identity, the first question might be - if we are a Métis "nation," what is Métis architecture?  How does this relate to the actual Métis Nation and architects such as Douglas Cardinal, Étienne Gaboury, and Alfred Waugh who are often described as Métis?  Transcending futile searches for a "Métis style", this session will consider a potentially distinct Canadian approach to material and ideological hybridity throughout the design process while recognizing the complexity of using the term Métis in this context.

Presented by various experts on behalf of Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
