SpanAir® Torsion Spring Panels from Chicago Metallic® meet all seismic design categories -- saving time, costs and worry

March 27, 2013

(Chicago) -- Blending visual sophistication and design simplicity, Chicago Metallic® Corporation’s SpanAir® Torsion Spring Panels are engineered and tested for use in all six seismic design categories (SDCs A-F), as outlined in the International Building Code. The panels integrate seamlessly with factory-slotted suspension grid for efficient and quick installation. Modern, clean lines combine with versatile finish options, high-performance durability and easy point-to-point access in one cost-effective, code-compliant package. Developed for expansive, interior ceiling systems, ideal applications include lobbies, assembly halls, reception areas and corridors. Creating spanning, monolithic ceilings, SpanAir Torsion Spring Panels integrate into and conceal the suspension grid, while easily incorporating air, fire, audio and other services. Made of non-combustible material, SpanAir Torsion Spring Panels have a Class A flame spread rating. Noise Reduction Coefficient up to 0.90 can be achieved with acoustical backing materials and a variety of perforation patterns. A wide range of finishes and a full spectrum of colors are available to match nearly any design palette from classic to contemporary styles. California Building Code calls for positive attachment to the suspension, usually requiring additional fasteners or accessory devices. SpanAir Torsion Spring Panels eliminate the need for additional components, as the positive attachment is inherent to the product. Williams explains, “It’s ready to go out of the box. No special skills or tools are required. The Torsion Spring Panels quickly install into grid-based systems. There are no hidden material or labor costs.” Torsion Spring Panels are constructed of recycled aluminum in a range of standard sizes. Once installed, the plenum may be accessed without disassembling or removing the entire panel. For property managers and maintenance teams, this can mean can fewer trips up and down a ladder and less material handling in the process. Addressing green design goals and daylighting strategies, the coatings used on Torsion Spring Panels maximize light reflectance, requiring fewer light fixtures and helping conserve energy. The metal used in SpanAir Metal Ceiling Systems contains no volatile organic compounds (no VOCs), which mitigates mold and microbial growth. Further enhancing the environmental attributes, the metal may be specified with a high recycled material content and is 100% locally recyclable. The use of environmentally responsible building materials is a critical component of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® certification process. Supporting LEED goals and documentation, Chicago Metallic includes downloadable resources on its website. Assisting with design and installation details, CAD drawings, Google™ SketchUp models and Revit® 3-D models also are on demand at www.chicagometallic.com.

The focus is on the major infrastructural investments ahead of the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. And other sectors are now being considered, from agriculture to renewable energy up food production. Verona, 21 March 2013. The first global exhibition system in the natural stone sector "speaks Italian", thanks to Marmomacc in Italy and the agreement between Veronafiere, Simest and Sace for the South American market, whereby Veronafiere - through Veronafiere do Brasil - takes a seat in the control room of Vitória Stone Fair and Cachoeiro Stone Fair in Espirito Santo State, the two Brazilian reference events for the stone industry as a whole in Latin America. The focus is on the major infrastructural investments ahead of the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. And other sectors are also now being considered, from agriculture to renewable energy and even food production. "With this initiative, VeronaFiere continues to encourage the development of an industrial policy for the country system whereby exhibitions can be exploited as an international promotional tool for companies and excellence made in Italy. The partnership with Sace and Simest is a concrete and positive example of what it means to work truly at the service of companies," said the President of VeronaFiere, Ettore Riello, during the press conference presenting the Brazil Stone Fairs project held at Veronafiere alongside the CEO & Director General of Veronafiere, Giovanni Mantovani, the CEO of Simest, Massimo D'Aiuto and Simonetta Acri, the Director of Rete Italia-Sace. "VeronaFiere," said CEO & Director General, Giovanni Mantovani, "has always been a pioneer in finalising an international development programme and keeps a consistently close eye on the opportunities offered by new markets and strategic sectors. Currently, Italy is Brazil's second largest trading partner in Europe and eighth in the world. The project presented today is fundamental to our growth and that of our customers, yet its vital strategic importance goes far beyond this, since it opens an operational and distribution platform in Brazil and throughout South America. This outline of this scheme can now be replicated in other sectors and other markets." "Our involvement in this internationalisation project," said Massimo D'Aiuto, CEO of SIMEST, "meets a need to encourage the development of a Country System industrial policy in which exhibitions are a vehicle for international promotion excellence the Made in Italy. Brazil is an important destination for Italian companies and," as D'Aiuto went on, "we have already supported numerous companies in this country, through investments and through funds for export credit and commercial development. Seventy-five equity projects are underway worth over 1 billion euros in total investments, with a commitment by SIMEST and the Venture Capital Fund coming to 146 million euros." "According to the forecasts in SACE's Export Report, the guide to markets with the highest potential we will present at Veronafiere next 8 April, Brazil will be one of the top markets for Italy over the next four years, with expected average annual growth rates of 11.3% for our export," explained Simonetta Acri, Director of SACE–Rete Italia. In order to intercept these opportunities, Veronafiere's presence "in loco" ensures constant and important supervision for Italian excellence that will assist penetration by Italian companies in this strategic business market. The investment by Veronafiere is a concrete example of what we like to call 'system building' and of course found our full support, knowing that today more than ever before the choice of appropriate financial-insurance tools can make all the difference as regards the success of "Made in Italy" world-wide." Brazil is one of the most promising scenarios in sectors linked with the building-construction industry: it is the fifth largest country in the world, the ninth economic power and in coming years will see massive investments in infrastructures, as the host country for football World Cup and the Olympics. The natural stone industry in Brazil. The natural stone industry represents 8% of Brazil's GDP. With over 43,000 tons/year of unprocessed and finished material, Brazil is the third largest exporter of granite. About 50% of national production in Brazil is concentrated in the small Espirito Santo State, which also achieves 65% of exports, with 1.5.40 million tons of blocks and slabs (with 40% of the total number of quarries in Brazil): this region is home to the Vitória Stone Fair and the Cachoeiro Stone Fair. According to Confindustria Marmomacchine data, Brazil is the leading export destination for Made in Italy machinery and equipment with 56.6 million euros in the first 9 months of 2012, up by 43% over 2011. Istat data processed Marmomacc Observatory-Veronafiere also indicate that in 2012, Italy exported worldwide unprocessed, semi-finished and finished stone products worth an overall a value of 1.7 billion euros, up by 9.7% compared to 2011 - with a special emphasis on finished and semi-finished products, totalling 1.4 billion euros (+11% over the previous year).

Eco Building Products, Inc. Continues To Raise The Bar On Building Code Minimums

March 25, 2013

ECOB Joins Forces with Online Continuing Education Provider AEC Daily in Association with the Institute of Defensive Building Practices VISTA, Calif., March 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Eco Building Products, Inc., (OTCQB: ECOB) announced today that the Company, through its web-based educational platform, has joined forces with AIA accredited online continuing education provider AEC Daily in association with the Institute of Defensive Building Practices (IDBP). The Institute of Defensive Building Practices (IDBP) was created by the President of ECOB to teach Contractors how to raise the bar on U.S. building standards set by the Uniformed Building Code (UBC). IDBP will soon offer courses founded on teaching contractors how to exceed U.S. code minimums established in the housing boom, and driven by the National Home Builders and Supply Chain; both of which are in need of updating. In addition to exceeding the established code minimums, this certification program is certain to help protect consumers and provide a specialization for already licensed professionals involved in residential construction. This program will accomplish this by enhancing the already licensed General Contractor's knowledge-base by providing them with the latest and most up-to-date accredited third-party certifications; with a focus on teaching how to build with 'Safety first' as a goal, 'Defensively' against ever occurring natural disasters, and most importantly in a sustainable 'Cost-effective' manner. AEC Daily provides twenty-four hour access to building product technical information, industry news, educational opportunities, discussion forums and much more. There exists a goal to provide Eco with marketing tools that will deliver the best return on investment using the IDBP combined with AEC Daily's products and services targeted primarily at the millions of architects, specifiers, engineers, interior designers, and construction professionals around the world. AEC Daily has the ability to convert individual organization's classes into continuing education programs that interface with IDBP's distance-learning platform. When coupled together, this program will certify Contractors as DEFENSIVE. More information on AEC Daily can be found at http://redirect.aecdaily.com/s18122/www.aecdaily.com/ Representative of the pull-through created by the Institute of Defensive Building Practices, a truckload of Eco's Red Shield lumber has been ordered by former FDNY Lieutenant John Nolan turned General Contractor for use in the Sandy Rebuild. John Nolan is rallying NY firefighters to show up in support of this product to be used as the product for the rebuild. John Nolan flew to California to meet with Eco at the Fire Training Center in Oceanside, Ca. because he wanted to test it and see it with his own eyes. "The use of technically advanced building materials such as this fire & mold-resistant lumber represents the only safe way to rebuild after Sandy," says John Nolan. It's cost-effective and now showing up in the local supply chain just in time for this rebuild. As demonstrated during the height of the 2012 Super Storm Sandy, one-hundred thirty plus homes burned to the ground in a single night. Nolan and his team want to make sure people are not rebuilding with products that will just hurt them the next time a storm shows up. "The Supply Chain continues to take its shots at Eco as Eco gains acceptance by firefighters from coast to coast. Eco's products are now available in the national supply chain, and are showing up in disaster rebuilds. This is happening around the country mostly in part because the people hurt by these disasters are looking to embrace technology," says Steve Conboy, President/CEO, Eco Building Products, Inc. "My team and I continue to make significant progress in trials and testing, as we prove day in and day out that there does exist cost-effective solutions for light-gauge framing members," added Conboy.

Bike Parking in Oregon

March 20, 2013

With increased bike rack installations, Oregon is doing it right. Oregon’s state motto is “She flies with her own wings” but with the extent to which cycling has grown in the state, it may as well be “She pedals with her own bike.” Over the last ten years, cycling rates have dramatically increased in Oregon and the increased levels of cyclists have brought with them increased demands on the infrastructure. As well as the construction of cycle lanes and trails, community leaders and business owners have recognized the need for bike parking racks and secure bicycle storage solutions. In fact, cycling has grown to the extent that some forward-thinking Oregon cities have even replaced car parking with bike corrals. Recent improvements to many Oregon cities’ cycling infrastructures have included the additions of: bike corrals, bike lockers, secured hangers, bike bollards and specialty artist designed devices. In special circumstances, cities have even employed temporary secured parking with industrial and hand- made devices. By increasing cyclists’ options for secure bike parking, Oregon is an example of a state that is doing things right. If you would like more information on bike parking in Oregon, please visit the Oregon State Government’s biking resource page. Rama is a “tree of light.” Architectural in form and minimalist in expression, Rama features “branches” stemming from a trunk that support multiple luminaires on a single pole. Designed by Gonzalo Mila, this distinguished element in the Santa & Cole Urban Elements collection is recipient of an ADI-FAD Silver Delta Award from Spain’s Association of Industrial Design. Rama ranges in height from 15 to 26 feet and accommodates up to five luminaires mounted in different directions and at different heights to put light where it’s needed. Otis Launches a New Elevator That is Simpler to Install, Sustainable to Operate, and is Powered by a Battery When the Power Fails

March 05, 2013

FARMINGTON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Otis Elevator Company, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, is launching a new residential Gen2® elevator that eliminates the need for three phase power, is solar-power capable, and uses battery technology to continue to run when the power goes out. The Gen2 Switch™ elevator will be available globally through Otis operating units in a phased roll-out in developed and emerging markets, including: Europe, India, South East Asia, and Central and South America. The Gen2 Switch elevator builds on the ground-breaking Gen2 product family, the fastest selling product in Otis’ 160-year history, with the added benefits of being simpler to install, more sustainable and safer during power failures or outages. Simpler: All you need is a regular electrical outlet - just plug it in, and the Gen2 Switch elevator has all the power it needs. The elevator operates on single-phase power, making it perfect for retrofits or in new buildings where the elevator would be the only three-phase power installation. Sustainable: Like other Otis Gen2 elevators with Otis’ patented flat-belts and ReGen™ drives, the Gen2 Switch elevator is up to 75 percent more efficient than traditional elevators. In addition, the Gen2 Switch elevator is the first low-power Gen2 system. The system requires 12 times less installed power from the power grid, compared to a standard Gen2 residential elevator.
