The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Structural Tension Rods

May 29, 2013

Ronstan Tensile Architecture was specifically selected to provide the exposed tension rods for the Glass Roof Support on the new dining area above the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. The fine machined and architectural look of the fork clevis and locking collars made the choice easy for the Architects and Engineers involved in the projects. The project was to replace the park setting located on the top of the Perelman Theater with a glass enclosed dining area. The Ronstan rods serve as the lower tension members on the exposed trusses supporting the glass ceiling above the dining area. House Lead Paint Bill Would Help Remodelers, Consumers

May 23, 2013

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Responding to concerns from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and affiliated trade groups, bipartisan legislation to make much-needed improvements to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting (LRRP) rule was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives today. The Lead Exposure Reduction Amendments Act of 2013 (H.R. 2093) is identical to legislation introduced in the last Congress. The bill would reinstate the opt-out provision to allow home owners without small children or pregnant women residing in the home to decide whether to require LRRP compliance, allow remodelers to correct paperwork errors without facing full penalties and provide an exemption for emergency renovations. It would also eliminate the requirement that recertification training be “hands on,” so that remodelers would no longer have to travel to training facilities out of their region. The LRRP rule applies to homes built before 1978 and requires renovator training and certification, adherence to lead-safe work practices and record keeping. By removing the opt-out provision in July 2010, EPA more than doubled the number of homes subject to the LRRP rule, adding an estimated $336 million per year in compliance costs to the remodeling community – without making young children any safer. For more information about remodeling, visit www.nahb.org/remodel.

Wright designed his first Usonian home during the Great Depression as a way to bring great architecture to every person, a challenge which concerned him throughout his career. Usonian homes took a new approach to construction, utilizing less-expensive materials and commonly excluded basements and attics. There was always a strong visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces as well as a focus on the main living areas, including the fireplace, encouraging families to gather together. Through his Usonian period, Wright pioneered new and innovative ideas related to energy, space and material efficiency.

PERMINATOR® Now Has Lower Perm Rating

May 01, 2013

Hampshire, IL – W. R. MEADOWS PERMINATOR 15 mil underslab vapor barrier/retarder now has a lower perm rating of 0.0063, which is 16 times better than that which is required of ASTM E1745 (0.1 perms). Proprietary resin technology allows PERMINATOR to also exceed the recommendation of ACI 302.2R (for a vapor barrier to be installed with a perm rating of less than 0.01 in specific instances). PERMINATOR surpasses these requirements by 37 percent, while maintaining its toughness, an equally important characteristic. The puncture resistance of PERMINATOR is 45 percent better than required by ASTM E1745 and will in turn protect the low perm rating by resisting punctures on the jobsite. Primarily designed for underslab construction, PERMINATOR is a highly effective, economical choice for helping to reduce the penetration of moisture and water vapor through the slab into the structure. In addition, PERMINATOR contributes to Energy and Atmosphere and Materials and Resources LEED credits. For more information on PERMINATOR, call (800) 342-5976, e-mail info@wrmeadows.com, and/or visit www.wrmeadows.com.
