Vectorworks 2019 Service Pack 3 brings deeper workflow connections to the design community

Columbia, MD (March 19, 2019)—With the release of Vectorworks 2019 Service Pack 3 (SP3), global design and BIM software solutions provider Vectorworks, Inc. is continuing its commitment to quality and performance improvements, and introducing three new features that greatly improve presentation and visualization capabilities, along with overall workflow between products.

Experience the Power of Real-time Rendering with Lumion LiveSync

Many designers create artistic and photo-realistic renderings of their designs using Vectorworks’ integrated rendering feature, Renderworks, while some designers also use the popular real-time rendering application, Lumion. To prioritize these varying needs, designers will enjoy a new live-sync rendering connection that allows designers to perform real-time rendering while making design changes in Vectorworks software. The LiveSync plug-in is developed by Lumion and is the first partner plug-in to use a new Vectorworks Graphics Sync (VGS) API, created by Vectorworks. The VGS API provides live access to the Vectorworks 3D scene and enables third parties to connect Vectorworks to any 3D visualization engine imaginable.

“Lumion is highly respected in the AEC and landscape design industries and has been incredibly popular with our users as a stand-alone tool,” said Dave Donley, director of product technology at Vectorworks. “Offering the live-sync rendering connection within our software shows our commitment to equipping designers with connections to the best tools, so they can easily and quickly complete their work while still providing top-notch quality presentations to their clients.”

Lumion and the LiveSync plug-in are available on the PC, and the plug-in is available immediately for English language users on the Lumion website. Additional language options will be offered soon. Learn more about how LiveSync works in this video, and sign up for the upcoming webinar with Michael Brightman on April 11 at 2 p.m. ET.

“We’re thrilled that Vectorworks users can now link with Lumion to immediately create a whole new level of sensorial experience in their 3D models,” said Ferry Marcellis, CEO at Lumion. “We’re confident that seeing the 3D model in a beautiful setting while simultaneously working on the design can open the door to a more productive, more enjoyable design and visualization experience for many Vectorworks users.”

Immerse Clients in Your Design with Linked Panoramas

With SP3, a new Vectorworks Cloud presentation feature allows designers with an active Vectorworks Service Select membership to use Vectorworks Cloud Services to generate presentations of designs with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Presentations include interactive 360 rendered panoramas that can be linked together to create a holistic, immersive experience. This unique presentation capability helps communicate and connect your design ideas with your clients’ expectations. Providing better communication among designers and clients, the feature allows the creation of a high-quality experience of a project’s design and a shareable web link. This video showcases the Vectorworks Cloud presentation feature.

Discover a Better Way to Work

Lastly, a year ago Vectorworks — along with MA Lighting and Robe lighting — announced the creation of a new open file format called the General Device Type Format (GDTF), which has continued its development to support the needs of the entertainment design and production workflow. In line with that effort, the founding companies of GDTF have also created a file format called My Virtual Rig (MVR). The MVR file format creates a two-way connection between planning, previz and console systems that implement the support needed for a seamless workflow. The MVR format contains the 3D model, texturing, position information and GDTF information from the design in Vectorworks Spotlight. With SP3, Vectorworks has implemented import and export of MVR in Vectorworks Spotlight 2019 and import of MVR into Vision 2019, the previz software from Vectorworks. Now, entertainment designers are able to create a more efficient and connected workflow between design planning and previz, merging the iterative changes of the model between Spotlight and Vision without re-importing and redefining the performance cues each time. Watch the video to see the GDTF updates in action.

“Our release of Vectorworks 2019 Service Pack 3 is the perfect example of our focus on connecting quality features and improvements with the end goal of superior workflows,” said Steve Johnson, vice president of product development. “With our forward-thinking methods and latest developments, we’ve demonstrated our power of connecting design with innovative cloud and mobile features, as well as our dedication to offering robust live-rendering applications.”

Enjoy Additional Quality and Performance Improvements

In addition to these great new features, SP3 also contains a number of additional performance improvements, including several fixes to compatibility with macOS Mojave and significant redraw speed enhancements with Space Objects.

This Service Pack is available as a downloadable updater for all U.S. English-based versions of Vectorworks 2019. To install, click "Read More" or select “Check for Updates” from the Vectorworks menu (Mac) or Help menu (Windows). To find out more about this release, read the tech bulletin. Renovation at Montana readiness center earns LEED Gold certification

March 14, 2019

Indianapolis – During the late 1990s, a changed mission and substantial growth at the Helena Aviation Readiness Center, required a renovation and addition of the relatively new facility. The new Aviation Readiness Center included a 40,000 square foot overhaul and a 60,000 square foot addition to what was originally designed as an Attack Battalion Armory. The project included more than eight acres of site improvements and six additional buildings.

Tim Meldrum, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, principal/owner at SMA Architects of Helena, Mont., says larger federally funded military projects are required to meet at least LEED Silver certification. The Helena Aviation Readiness Center achieved Gold status, with some help from the Envelope 2000® composite wall panel from Citadel Architectural Products.

“We are proud to have been part of a military design process that allowed for sophisticated materials and use of color,” Meldrum says. “The Department of Military Affairs was supportive and even excited to challenge traditional military design. It's a project that got to be a showcase for both the military and SMA.”

Citadel's Envelope 2000® composite panel consists of two aluminum skins, bonded to a thermoset phenolic resin core. Standard sizes available include 8-, 10- and 12-foot lengths, in widths of 4 or 5 feet. The life cycle and recyclability of the product helped achieve LEED certification. The colors selected for the Helena Aviation Readiness Center renovation were Statuary Bronze and Spanish Red. The Envelope 2000 panels with the Deep-Reveal attachment system, featuring a 1-5/16-inch depth, were installed by Swank Enterprises of Montana.

The existing facility was constructed in 1995 as an attack battalion armory with a strength of approximately 240, which was increased to more than 400 in the late 1990s. Studies on the renovation started in 2006, the project started in June of 2015 and ultimately completed in August 2017.

“Swank built the original structure in the mid-90s,” says Kevin Forbes, project manager with Swank Enterprises. “Not long after that, the mission changed and the building was pretty much obsolete, but they worked with it for 20 years. We came in and built around the original 40,000-square-foot structure. It’s now 100,000 square feet. Between that renovation and the five other buildings, it’s the biggest project I've been a part of at Swank.

“The exterior façade is masonry veneer and Citadel panels. The building has two different roofing systems with many different lines. In general, the panels are located above the veneer and scattered about the main building. In most cases, we worked above the many different roof elevations which created some challenges during install.”

Swank Enterprises installed 8,230 square feet of Statuary Bronze along with 7,660 square feet of the Spanish Red on the main Readiness Center building. Another 2,575 square feet of Statuary Bronze was installed on a new maintenance garage.

“This project has been a big part of my career and I’m extremely happy to have seen it through,” Meldrum says. “I've had multiple roles in this project as my role changed in the firm, starting as a young designer and now as the principal/owner. It's a very special project for me and it always will be.”

Introducing the Living Umbrella by Living Canopies®: the patio umbrella reimagined as a canopy-garden

March 13, 2019

College Park, MD--Living Canopies Ltd. is excited to offer the world's first and only Living Umbrella®—a canopy-garden above your head that creates beautiful, nurturing shade and cooler temperatures. It is shaped like a patio umbrella but it has live plants for its canopy instead of a sheet of plastic like old-fashioned umbrellas. It uses beautiful flowering plants, like Suntory's Sun-Parasol Mandevillas, to shade and protect people naturally. The Edible Umbrella® can make urban farming possible where space is limited by growing fruits and vegetables above your head for easy access. Its smart, programmable, solar powered irrigation system makes care simple and easy.

The Living Umbrella® keeps temperatures cool by transpiring water, reflecting sunlight and blocking UV rays. It is net carbon positive with each umbrella avoiding the emission of 25 pounds of CO2 per year. It reduces stormwater flows by acting as microstorage, similar to a forest canopy. It provides pollinator habitat when desired. It supports human wellness via its biophilic design. Its living, dynamic canopy can make people feel better about themselves and about their world.

The Living Umbrella® is a splendid way to make customers happier at restaurants, resorts, hotels, and theme parks by improving the guests' environment. The experience of sitting beneath a Living Umbrella® while sipping on a glass of cabernet is pure, sharable joy.

Ecological engineers at the University of Maryland invented The Living Umbrella®, which is now patent-pending in the United States and European Union.

Metl-Span's insulated metal panels check all the boxes - Speed of construction, durability, aesthetics required for new office, warehouse

March 05, 2019

LEWISVILLE, Texas – The owners of Electronics for Imaging (EFI) had high expectations moving into a new east coast headquarters in Londonderry, N.H. Versatility, durability, ease and speed of construction as well as aesthetics all played a role in the selection of insulated metal panels from Metl-Span for the 185,000 square foot project – that's a little more than four acres!

EFI is a worldwide provider of products, technology and services leading the transformation of analog to digital imaging. EFI designs, engineers and manufactures large format inkjet printers as well as the inks.

The new building is comprised of three parts, including 39,200 square feet for a two-story office, demo and training area; 100,800 square feet of room dedicated to engineering, product development and manufacturing; and 45,200 square feet of warehouse.

“IMPs were selected for their aesthetics, insulation value and ease of installation,” says Keith Wentworth, Vice President at Dutton & Garfield of Hampstead, N.H. “The panels are a single-step process compared to other exterior cladding assemblies that include anywhere from two to three or four steps and multiple trades. IMPs provide a weathertight building quicker than traditional methods.”

Dutton & Garfield installed four different Metl-Span insulated metal panels:

·Striated in Regal Gray (4,756 square feet)
·TuffWall in Textured White (14,199 square feet)
·Light Mesa in Polar White (27,642 square feet)
·Mesa in Igloo White (2,472 square feet)

“We’ve worked with this product before and we’ve been quite pleased with the results,” says Steve Burnell, AIA Architect, Burnell-Johnson Architects of Manchester, N.H. “The textured panel has a desirable aesthetic, as opposed to a metal building. It's just a nice finish.

“Because of the size of this project – it's about 185,000 square feet – there were plenty of challenges, mostly with the mechanical workings inside the facility. So, it was nice to work with the insulated metal panel which is a one-stop weathertight system. It's the interior wall, the insulation and the exterior wall in one product.”

Dutton & Garfield used a 40-ton crane to set the panels, which were moved from the staging area to the work area with an all-terrain forklift. “The men worked out of boom lifts to attach the panels to the building,” Wentworth says. “Although we typically would use a vacuum lifting machine, we chose not to because a large portion of the panels were TuffWall and the machine doesn't work well on that type of panel.”

Wentworth says the project was a huge success. “Everyone, most importantly the owner, thinks the building looks great,” he says. “They were able to consolidate multiple locations and are more efficient and generate more income. It's their new home and they are proud to show it off to customers and the community.”
