  • In many urban watersheds regulators are adopting green infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. Retrofitting impervious pavement with materials designed to infiltrate stormwater is one obvious solution. The use of permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP) in parking lots and driveways has grown significantly in the last decade. Dozens of publications have demonstrated the runoff and pollutant control benefits these systems provide. However, parking lots and driveways cover relatively small areas within an urban watershed. Some municipalities now recognize that municipal roadways and alleyways can be designed to handle vehicular traffic while also functioning as a stormwater control measure using PICP. This presentation will describe how PICP systems are designed and constructed. Examples will illustrate the keys to properly constructing and maintaining these effective stormwater management systems. An update on the Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Project will be provided highlighting how Atlanta converted six miles of impervious roadway to PICP to reduce flooding and combined sewer overflows. The presentation will conclude with lessons learned related to utilities, roadway slopes, and maintenance.

The presentation will address the history of reinforced earth structures and summarize the site conditions that impact SRW performance and design.   • Maintaining the beauty and aesthetics of a project requires protecting against the elements. An effective way to do this is with the use of protective coatings. This course discusses fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) fluoropolymer coating technology, including the various types of FEVE resins and their applications, with a focus on performance characteristics, sustainability factors including LEED credits, and life cycle costs.


  • Onsite Storm Water Management (SWM) is becoming increasingly important and, in many cases, mandatory. Concerns regarding municipal sewer system performance and watershed health have generated numerous requirements and techniques to mitigate the effects of storms at the local or site level. Following an overview of these issues, this course examines, in detail, a high-performance system of permeable plastic paving grids that addresses such issues while meeting the most stringent demands of onsite traffic, aesthetics, and SWM. This examination includes installation techniques, details, and specifications.

  • Segmented pavers have been successfully used for roads, courtyards and paths for hundreds of years. Durability of materials being one of the key reasons for their lasting popularity. These days modern pavers offer up a wide variety of newer performance capabilities and finishes. In this course, we’ll take a look at the unique technologies of segmental concrete paver systems, the types, finishes and their design considerations.


  • Buildings need protection from cyber as well as physical threats. Building shielding offers several architectural solutions that contribute to the security of both building occupants and wireless systems. These solutions also help reduce unwanted solar heat and glare while providing protection from the elements and people. This course presents the security and performance benefits of shielding technology that can improve wireless performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort, satisfaction, and safety.


  • Description: Green roof systems are typically described in terms of soil depth (intensive vs. extensive) or where they are assembled (built-in-place vs. modular). These are useful categories, but don’t address key elements of green roof design, such as drainage, water storage, roof slope, and other considerations. This presentation will review different green roof systems and components, and their use in meeting project goals relating to storm water management, integration with hardscape, and constructability.

  • Clay bricks have been used for construction projects such as walls and pavement for thousands of years. Fired bricks are one of the strongest and longest-lasting building materials and offer many advantages. This course discusses the advantages of using clay permeable paving in a construction project and how a permeable pavement system mitigates the damaging effects of stormwater runoff, and presents an overview of the design process.

  • Selecting outdoor kitchen cabinetry and appliances that meet a client’s needs and budget, and that address climate concerns can be challenging. This course explores the design of safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor kitchen and living areas, and presents the various types of cabinetry available, with a focus on stainless steel as a positive alternative for cabinetry. Included is a synopsis of outdoor kitchen design principles and considerations.


  • The course provides an overview of pedestrian (walkable) roof and balcony polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane systems and includes discussions on their advantages, membrane construction, waterproofing concepts, and design considerations for integration into the building envelope.


  • One of the most exciting developments in outdoor living is the arrival of ¾” thick porcelain outdoor pavers. The concept began to spark interest in 2012 and is continuing to grow in popularity. Outdoor porcelain pavers have the same benefits as regular porcelain –being frost-resistant, skid-resistant, durable and easy to clean – combined with incredibly high breakage loads (up to 2,000 pounds) creates the perfect solution for gardens, terraces and high traffic outdoor areas. Outdoor porcelain pavers can be dry laid onto grass, gravel, dirt and sand – or onto terraces and roofs using raised supports – without grout, adhesives or specialized workers, making installation incredibly easy

  • Selection of a material for a railing or fence project requires considering its long-term performance, maintenance, cost, and aesthetics. Regardless of the railing application (commercial, residential, or industrial), the coating process makes a difference to the life of the project. This course evaluates the different coating technologies available for steel railing and fence systems and discusses the factors to consider when selecting a coating for a steel railing and fence systems.


  • This LEED® Specific course looks at concepts of New Urbanism in its applicability to the LEED rating system. This course will compare, contrast, and provide design elements that fall within the standards of New Urbanism but meet the standards set forth by the LEED rating system. LEED for New Construction and LEED for Neighborhood Design are addressed throughout the course. Key concepts include community connectivity, density issues, streetscapes and project site and surrounding factors. Ways to earn the LEED credits are also addressed.

  • Time spent on the playground has positive effects on students’ mental wellness, physical health, and academic performance, yet too many playgrounds consist of dark, hot, boring asphalt. This course presents the benefits of low-cost, water-based acrylic coatings to renew and rejuvenate playground surfaces. These solar reflective coatings help protect asphalt and keep it significantly cooler while transforming dull play surfaces into safe, fun, and engaging spaces.

  • This program provides a brief overview of Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement (PICP) systems and then focuses on the long-term surface infiltration performance of these effective stormwater control measures. Mechanisms for sedimentation and clogging of PICP joints is discussed along with a review of ASTM C 1781 testing procedures. Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal efficiencies and current research on variables that contribute to hydraulic performance of PICPs are discussed. The presentation concludes with information on surface infiltration maintenance and restoration methods including a review of available cleaning machines. PICP maintenance costs and inspection checklists are also reviewed.
