  • This seminar, organized into 3 sections, will help you understand various aspects of the pitched slope residential roofing market. 1. The first section will review the history of roofing underlayments and their role in water management in the structure. This segment will explore the evolution of different kinds of underlayments under asphaltic shingles and the move towards synthetic underlayments. 2. The second section will review the types of synthetic roofing underlayments and common installation detail failures. This includes an overview of mechanically-fastened, self-adhered, and peel-and-stick roofing underlayments. 3. The third section will review ice damming and moisture intrusion resulting therein. This includes a review of how ice damming can occur, its effects, and strategies that can be employed to safeguard against it. 4. The last section will review the relevant performance criteria applicable to roofing underlayments. These include AC-188, QUV Accelerated Weathering Testing, EMMAQUA Testing, ASTM G154 Testing, and ASTM 4869

  • This course presents the complete design approach to rainscreens and explains why rainscreens are an important topic for the building envelope and enclosures. This course emphasizes the use of control layers to maximize the performance of a drained, backed ventilated rainscreen system for both new and existing buildings. The audience will be able to identify different rainscreen technologies and understand why complete approach is beneficial to a building’s performance, through compatibility among the assembly components.   • The ancient concept of nature as healing got lost in the medical strides of the 20th century. Today, backed by extensive research, healthcare providers realize anew the importance of nature in reducing patient stress and improving health outcomes. Healing gardens in healthcare facilities not only benefit patients and residents, but also family members and staff. Gardens serve the environment by improving air quality, and by reducing stormwater runoff and the impacts of the heat island effect. This course teaches participants the principles of designing healing gardens. Topics include a history of the role of nature in healing, research findings showing the curative aspects of nature, design features for healing gardens that improve mental, physical, and social well-being and the role of performance fabric for shade structures and seating in healing gardens.

  • The spread of smoke in mid- and high-rise building fires is recognized as a major threat to the safety of the building occupants and responding fire personnel and the effectiveness of firefighting operations. This course explains how smoke migrates in a multi-story building fire and discusses how building codes have evolved to address this danger and why they mandate smoke containment in specific areas of a structure.   • In this one-hour course, we will discover the strengths and advantages of FEVE fluoropolymer topcoats. We will evaluate coating performance tests including accelerated weathering and real-time weathering and what the implications are for the life of different coatings.   • With the complexity of commercial buildings and demand for energy efficiency on the rise, interest in high-performance air and water-resistive barrier systems (or AWBs) is growing. Architects naturally want to choose the most effective AWB for their projects. But with so many options, it can be difficult to discern which solutions will perform and protect long into a building’s future. This presentation explores the distinct benefits of fluid-applied 100% silicone AWBs, and the reasons they make an excellent choice for many building projects. We discuss the basics and benefits of air barriers, as well as codes and requirements to follow in order to reduce risk. We explain the key properties that set 100% silicone apart from other fluid-applied chemistries. We also cover installation details for 100% silicone AWBs.
