The rapidly rising rate of extreme weather events, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, heat waves, and drought, is plaguing municipalities and building owners throughout the United States. The construction industry, from product manufacturers to architects and engineers, is quickly realizing its obligation to design and build resilient structures that can withstand forces of nature such as high wind, flooding, and wildfire. Fiber cement architectural wall panels are one such building product that can be installed as a rainscreen and have been proven to withstand these elements. This course will explore the societal, economic, and environmental costs of extreme weather events; the importance of building resiliency; and how high-performance architectural wall panels can help meet this end.

Rough openings are holes in the building enclosure, fitted with fenestrations that leak or will leak. It is critical to properly direct those leaks out of the enclosure. Designs for rough opening specify; tapes, sealants or flashing materials that are water, air, water vapor tight or vapor open. When detailed and installed correctly, most of these materials prevent water from entering into the interstitial wall cavities, allow the “leaks” to drain out of the building enclosure. Tapes, sealants and flashing components can fail over time or are improperly installed allowing water intrusion, trapping the water is vapor impermeable. By utilizing vapor open systems for rough opening materials, water that once trapped by impermeable flashing systems can escape via vapor diffusive drying. This presentation will describe failures, correct installation and testing of rough opening flashing and address current research on vapor open rough opening systems and how permeability enhances rough opening assembly performance.

Commercial roofing systems are quite varied. As such, their performance expectations are varied, and their suitability for different applications vary. Certain types of high performance roofing systems require specific components, and performance standards to achieve energy efficient and durable life cycle performance. This course describes the high performance attributes of extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) in commercial roofing applications including PRMA (green/vegetated), mechanically attached, architectural metal and recover systems for which XPS is uniquely suited. It defines the building code/performance standards and best specification practices for those systems. Further, it compares various insulation types, how they are manufactured, and how the manufacturing process effects the physical properties and performance of each type of insulation.

Modern high performance buildings demand more than independent envelope components. They require a coordinated air control strategy that begins with the details to the final building air leak testing. This course examines the role of continuous air barriers in improving energy efficiency, durability, and occupant comfort in commercial construction. Participants will explore how air leakage increases condensation risk, reduces thermal efficiency and impacts long-term building performance. This course will review best practices for detailing critical transitions such as roof-to-wall and wall to below-grade connections, where discontinuities often lead to failures. Special attention will be given to vapor permeable air barrier systems and their ability to maintain airtightness while supporting drying potential within the assemblies. Through discussion of real-world projects across mission-critical facilities, large-format industrial buildings, multi-family housing, and commercial construction, attendees will learn how integrated, permeable enclosure strategies support long-term resilience, effective moisture management, and reduce building failure risk.

Knowing the importance of preserving existing buildings and material, as explored in “Re-Solution Part I: A Carbon Case for Building and Material Re-use” this course will examine which strategies are best for different structures and situations. We will explore different [a host] of scenarios and case studies, with an eye towards the potential for improvement across the board. Carbon (dioxide) is a hot topic these days and will be a companion of sorts, though we will be sure to include H20 (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen) since all of these work interdependently in buildings, colluding as an all-too-often overlooked enemy of sustainability: moisture damage. If a building leaks, it is not sustainable. Here we will brush with a broader stroke, emphasizing the need for good design and detailing, while exploring examples of successful wall and roof assemblies. In “Re-solutions III: Facilitating Architectural Re-use and Wiser Wood in New Construction,” we will hone in on specific factors which can help hedge successes and minimize pitfalls in implementing reuse strategies.
