Accoya® wood is a durable, stable and sustainable wood that has been produced by Accsys continuously since 2007. Volume has grown each year it has been sold through a select group of distributors and selected partners in North America, and the world over. The acetylation of lumber was developed by the USDA Forest Products Lab, Madison WI during the 50’s to 90’s. Despite the performance potential, it proved very difficult to scale up; until Accsys developed Accoya.
Acetylation is a process which increases the amount of 'acetyl' molecules in wood, thereby changing its physical properties. The process protects wood from rot by making it "inedible" to most micro-organisms and fungi, without toxins. It also greatly reduces the wood's tendency to swell and shrink, making it less prone to cracking and ensuring that, when painted, it requires dramatically reduced maintenance.
Accoya opens up new opportunities including windows, doors, decking, cladding and glulam structural beams and is guaranteed for 50 years in exterior use and 25 years when used in the ground.
Extensive laboratory and field testing by leading institutes around the world (including in New Zealand, USA, UK, Sweden, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, the Netherlands and Japan) has shown the performance of Accoya wood to be extremely reliable.
