This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Redwood—one of nature’s longest-lasting, strongest, most beautiful and environmentally-friendly building materials—is commonly used for decking, siding, and timbers because of its natural beauty and resistance to decay. This course covers the sustainable attributes of redwood building products, including a discussion of redwood lumber grades, characteristics, and applications. Also presented are the results of a recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparing redwood and plastic-composite decking options and information about redwood’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain why selecting redwood is an environmentally-friendly choice.
  • Identify the most sustainable forest management methods and define the initiatives of The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
  • Understand the results of a redwood LCA and EPD and the relevance to sustainable building practices.
  • List the green features and unique attributes of redwood that combine to make it an ideal building material choice.
  • Discuss the lumber grades, finishing options, maintenance recommendations, and the variety of applications of redwood.
