Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a molded, lightweight, resilient, foamed plastic that is used in a variety of construction products. The impact-absorbing and structural properties of EPS provide a unique advantage over alternative materials.
This course provides a review of EPS insulation, EPS geofoam, and ICF/SIP building system solutions produced using sustainable EPS manufacturing processes. Applicable material properties, product standards, and code references are also discussed.

Background: W. James Whalen has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and is a registered professional engineer in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. He is a Member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, Canadian Geotechnical Society, Construction Specifications Canada, and Construction Specifications Institute.
Mr. Whalen has been involved with the development of product standards and building code requirements related to the full range of Plasti-Fab EPS product applications for 22 years. He is an active member of the ULC Standards Committee on Thermal Insulation Materials and Systems (Task Group Chair for EPS/XPS insulation standard) and ASTM International (Task Group Chair for EPS/XPS insulation standard as well as member on the ASTM Committee D35 related to EPS geofoam and ASTM Committee E6 related to structural insulating panels and insulating concrete forms). His current industry activities include Chair of EPS Industry Association Technical Committee and member of the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) Technical Committee. At Plasti-Fab his responsibilities include developing and maintaining product regulatory listings/evaluations and providing customer technical support for all Plasti-Fab product lines in Canada and the US.
