- List and compare the three types (detection, suppression and passive ) of life safety systems.
Discuss the importance of adopting a balanced approach towards the design and installation of redundant life safety systems in multi-story construction.
Define the areas and effects of fire propagation in multi-story buildings.
State the design principles for perimeter curtain wall fire containment to facilitate a successful installation.
Discuss the current model building codes, standards, fire resistance directories that address life safety protection requirements for the perimeter of a building.

Name: James C. Shriver
Title: Director - Technical Services, Thermafiber, Inc.
Background: Jim Shriver has a BS in Engineering and is currently employed by Thermafiber, Inc. (formerly USG Corp.) as Director of Technical Services. Jim has over 30 years of experience in the mineral wool industry. His related activities in the firestopping industry include ASTM membership and various ASTM Task Group memberships, most notably as Chairman of the newly formed Perimeter Fire Barrier Test Standard Task Group. He is also the International Firestop Council (IFC) Chairman and Inspection Manual board member of the Alliance for Fire and Smoke Control and Containment (AFSCC). Jim has much experience in model building code development as well as the UL and OPL testing coordinator for Thermafiber, Inc. Jim is an AIA approved continuing education instructor.
