Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Recall at least 2 approaches of cool roofs in curbing the urban heat island effect and how it contributes to improved air quality.
- Use white reflective vinyl roofing to meet Energy Star®, Title 24, LEED®, and Green Globes™ criteria for successful installation of environmentally sound cool roofing systems.
- Calculate how building energy costs and peak energy demand can be reduced through the use of white reflective vinyl roofing membranes and green or planted roofs.

Background: Cary Black is chair of the technical committee of the Vinyl Roofing Division (www.vinylroofs.org) of the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association (CFFA), Cleveland, Ohio, and is the Quality Control/R&D Manager for Duro-Last Roofing, Saginaw, Michigan. Over the last 25 years, Black has worked as a chemist, process engineer and materials scientist for a variety of companies and organizations. He is active in ASTM, the American Society of Quality and Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI), and participates in the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing Research Committee.
