Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Define and explain at a high level the concept of “acuity adaptability,” utilizing the strengths and weaknesses of the term in your conversation.
- Discuss the dynamic designing relationship between technology and flexibility, specifically the emergence of “plug and play” hardware in the medical field.
- Put into practice the typical patient room concept based on the acuity adaptability dialogue, keeping in mind the needs of the clinical staff, the patient, and the patient’s family.
- Acknowledge the balance between clinical excellence and the overall hospitality experience, by identifying factors specific to the concept.

Name: Dennis Gallant
Title: Global Patient Environment Portfolio Director, Hill-Rom, Inc.
Background: Dennis Gallant has served the healthcare industry for the past 35 years as a lead product and patient room designer developing innovative products and programs for the Hill-Rom Company. He lead Hill-Rom's "Patient Room of the Future" research initiative, which was designed to identify next generation user trends, technologies, and design innovations for hospitals of the future.
He helped launch Hill-Rom's professional design services group that provides programs that assist hospitals and design professionals rapidly create innovative patient environments through a caregiver based CAD design process and hands on, rapid mock-up techniques. Dennis has participated on a number of industry advisory panels including the Advisory Board Company and SCCM, and published articles on acuity adaptable room design. He has led a number of patient room research initiatives including an evidence based design study in partnership with Banner Health and the Center for Health Design.
Dennis has been awarded over 50 U.S. patents for medical devices and patient room equipment including hospital beds, furniture, and architectural products. He is currently serving as Hill-Rom’s Global Patient Environment Portfolio Director responsible for identifying and bringing to market next generation patient room architectural and furniture products.
