- Explain the importance of incorporating universal design into housing and appliances.
Explain how current accessibility codes and standards are related to universal design.
Describe and explain the key principals of universal design and how to apply them to housing.
Ascertain universal design solutions for kitchens, laundry areas, and storage areas.
Explain the concept of locating appliances and controls within an “operational zone”.
Recognize how to identify and evaluate universal design features in home appliances.

Name: Andrea L. Hutchins, AIA, AKBD
Title: Project Manager, Design + Development Group, Whirlpool Corporation
Background: Andrea Hutchins is a Project Manager in the Design + Development Group of Whirlpool Corporation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy, is a Member of the American Institute of Architects, and a NKBA Associate Kitchen + Bath Designer (AKBD).
Andrea’s professional experience includes the architecture firms of Brooks Architectural, Inc., Mamola Associates Architects, P.C., Hobbs + Black Architects, and The Troyer Group. Andrea joined Whirlpool Corporation in 2008, where she specializes in partnering with the design and building industry through the creation of educational, informational, and experiential resources for design professionals. She speaks and teaches on behalf of the Whirlpool Corporation brands including: Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Maytag, and Gladiator GarageWorks about design and technology trends that impact residential architecture.
Andrea practiced both residential and commercial architecture for seven years prior to her employment with Whirlpool Corporation. In her role as a practicing architect she designed projects in compliance with ADA design standards and state codes.
Active in both the professional community and her local community, Andrea is a member of the Southwest Michigan chapter of the AIA. Andrea volunteers with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
