Metal Roofing Installations: Key Considerations

In this video series course, we cover common metal roofing installation considerations. The first video discusses typical metal roof penetrations and details for proper installation. The second video presents metal enhancement options and design and installation tips to prevent premature corrosion in marine environments. The final video explores the expansion and contraction of standing seam metal roofs and how points of fixity accommodate thermal movement.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

Describe three types of metal roof penetrations and discuss the details associated with the proper installation of metal roof penetrations to ensure long-term performance.
Recall how the paint system, substrate, metal components, and installation of metal roofing affect its performance in corrosive marine environments.
Compare the impact of thermal movement on standing seam versus exposed fastener metal roofs.
Explain the three ways that points of fixity accommodate thermal movement in a standing seam metal roof.

Name: Jeff Haddock & Michelle Vondran

Title: Technical Representative & Technical Manager, AEP Span & Steelscape

Background:

Jeff Haddock started with AEP Span in 2002 as a production operator. Jeff has held various positions at AEP Span including production lead, production scheduler, and customer service representative. He is currently the technical representative for the Southwest. Jeff inspects projects for weathertight warranties, conducts product training for approved installers and internal staff, and leads architectural training and presentations. He also performs project design and guide specification reviews and revisions. Jeff is the lead developer of the AIA Continuing Education Metal Roof Systems: Design & Installation Considerations presentation and has extensive product and application knowledge. He has earned VP Buildings Service Plus and Lean Six Sigma Variance Reduction certification.

Michelle Vondran is the Technical Manager for NS BlueScope Coated Products, North America. Michelle graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with a bachelor's degree of science in chemistry. She started her career as a research chemist with Morton Industrial Coatings (later BASF) with a focus on polymers. This position included lab development as well as lab-to-production scale-up and manufacturing quality and process control. Eventually, Michelle’s focus shifted to cool pigmentation, where she brought the first cool coil coatings to market. She was active in the Cool Roof Rating Council and Energy Star Roofing Program. She joined Steelscape as a quality engineer for the Rancho Cucamonga, CA, paint line. While there, she held the role of quality systems manager and now holds the position of Technical Manager. She oversees quality systems and technical service for BlueScope Coated Products North America, which is composed of Steelscape and ASC Profiles. She is an active member of the National Coil Coaters Association, sitting on its technical committee, as well as of the Zinc Aluminum Coaters Association.
