Metal Roofing: History, Material, & Application

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Durability and strength are two benefits that are fueling the growing popularity of metal roofing systems. This course examines the performance characteristics of metal roofing materials and the technological advancements that increase corrosion resistance and coating durability. The advantages of factory-formed panels and components and the environmental benefits of metal roofs are also presented.

Prerequisites: No

Course Level: Introductory

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • State the performance differences in steel vs. aluminum and galvanized vs. aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel to demonstrate the important considerations for metal roof corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments.
  • Describe coating options for metal roofing systems and specify pretreatment and coating processes that will result in a product that resists staining, chalking, fading, and environmental aging that can shorten the roof's life.
  • Explain the advantages of the factory setting to produce consistent finished products that result in a weathertight installation, pass rigorous testing and certification standards, and achieve a variety of panel forms to meet any design goal.
  • Discuss the environmental benefits of a metal roofing system including how it can contribute toward a cool roof, is compatible with solar panels, can be used as an EPA-recommended material for water catchment systems, and may contribute toward meeting credit requirements in LEED® v4.
