Risks of self harm and suicide are inherent in behavioral health facilities. The common areas for concern in psychiatric inpatient units are ligature attachment points that present a hanging risk. In this course we review the evolution of patient safety hardware with a focus on ligature-resistant hardware designed to prevent the opportunity for self harm.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain how a lockset can be used for ligature attachment and the importance of using ligature-resistant patient safety hardware in psychiatric facilities.
- Define the three categories that pertain to room risk assessment.
- Discuss the evolution of patient safety hardware designed to minimize the risks of self harm, contraband, and barricade.
- Define the specification considerations of patient safety hardware that need to be factored in the design of behavioral health environments.

His previous roles in Brand, Product, and Marketing Management with consumer durables companies such as H.B. Ives, Corbin Russwin, and 3M Cuno, provide him with product and market knowledge needed to expand Accurate Lock‘s presence in the architectural hardware industry. He has spent his career marketing to the building industry through key influences such as Architects, Engineers, Contractors, End Users, Contract Hardware, and Decorative Hardware & Plumbing Distributors in coordination with National Sales Organizations. Jeff is a member of DHI, DPHA, ASHE, and NAPHS. Jeff resides in Litchfield, CT with his wife and two children.
