Introduction to Insulated Roof Decks

Insulated metal panels (IMPs) have been providing highly efficient air, water, vapor, and thermal barriers for exterior roof and wall applications for decades. This proven high-performance technology is now being utilized for low-slope roofs as an insulated metal roof deck. This course introduces the insulated roof deck system, its composition, how it is manufactured and installed, and design considerations. The features and performance benefits are also discussed, including sustainability features, diaphragm capabilities, and the different fastening patterns that can be used.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Compare the specification and installation of insulated roof decks to traditional low-slope membrane roofs.
• Discuss the two components of insulated roof decks, their manufacturing process, and installation using tongue-and-groove joinery.
• Describe the environmental impact of insulated roof decks, including contribution to energy efficiency, use of recycled content, and end-of-life strategies.
• Explain how insulated roof decks provide diaphragm shear and how they can also be used in nondiaphragm applications.
• Identify the membranes and different fastening systems that can be used with diaphragm and nondiaphragm applications.
