Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Define and identify the rates of reclamation and recycling for steel.
Explain how the durability of this material contributes to sustainability and reduces environmental impact.
Recall the performance ratings for specialty steel doors and frames including resistance to fire; sound attenuation; resistance to a wide range of ballistics; blast resistance; and tornado resistance.
Describe the composition of stainless steel and list its contribution to sustainability.

Background: 2005 -- Jack Shinder is President of AMBICO Limited, manufacturer of specialized door, door frame and window products. AMBICO Limited is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2005 – a company founded by Jack’s father Israel Shinder along with his brother-in-law, Emmanuel Lightstone, in 1955.
Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada Jack entered the religious studies and philosophy programs at University of Toronto. In 1981, after graduating from Brandeis University, in Boston, with two graduate degrees, he entered employment at AMBICO Limited. He became President 5 years later, in 1986.
An expert in the design and manufacture of specialized steel and wood door products, Jack has become an authority on acoustic door, door frame and window products. He has authored a number of articles: Crashing Through The Sound Barrier; Doors That Make A Statement; and Thinking Outside The Box, which are well known to architects, engineers and acousticians involved in the construction industry.
Jack is a member of a number of professional associations including: the Canadian Steel Door Manufacturers Association; Door & Hardware Institute; National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers and the Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association.
Jack has been married for 25 years. He and Yaffa have three children: Ariel, Gideon and Jona. He is very involved in his community and actively supports and promotes education and literacy. He is a long time Chairperson of the Ottawa School of Speech & Drama and is active in raising funds for this leading drama school as well as for additional local and national charities.
At AMBICO, Jack continues to oversee the firm’s annual double-digit growth. He exercises specific interest in the development of door and door frame technology.
