Daylighting with Aerogel-Filled Multiwall Polycarbonate (REMOVED)

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Aerogel is a translucent lightweight solid made from silica (sand) that is long-lasting and safe in its production and application. When filled with aerogel, multiwall polycarbonate provides high strength, high light transmittance, and high thermal resistance in a lightweight, long-lasting glazing system. This course examines aerogel’s remarkable properties and the glazing performance of aerogel-filled multiwall polycarbonate to daylighting design in multiple architectural design applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain what aerogel is and key performance characteristics.
  • List the benefits and design considerations for daylighting.
  • Describe how aerogel-filled multiwall polycarbonate contributes to sustainability, and explain how the method of manufacturing allows for additional energy saving benefits.
  • Describe the properties of aerogel-filled multiwall polycarbonate, including its light transmission and thermal performance.
  • Recall the various architectural applications of aerogel-filled multiwall polycarbonate sheeting in industrial, residential and sport facilities.
