(Canadian Version) It is well known that colour in the built environment has an impact on the perception of space and our behaviour in a space. Designers must understand colour to create an ambiance or style and to influence spatial use and perception. In this course, we look at how colour is perceived and processed, its emotional impact, and how it interacts with light, and we provide tips for implementing colour in the built environment.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain how the colour wheel helps us understand the relationships between colours and how different colours can be combined.
- Describe how the human eye and brain work together to process colour, as well as how the psychology of colour affects human emotional, physical, and behavioural responses.
- Recall the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and the principles of colour addition and subtraction.
- Explain how different types of natural and artificial lighting affect colour.
- Recognize current colour trends, emerging and forecast colours, and design schemes.
