Specifying Air Barrier Membranes that Comply with Building Code Fire Safety Provisions

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Recent changes in commercial wall assembly design have resulted in increased energy efficiency but also present new challenges to meeting building code fire safety provisions. The focus of this course is on air barrier membranes and the proper integration of these materials into fire-safe wall assemblies.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain why air barrier membranes and foam insulation can improve occupant comfort and indoor air quality by creating a tighter building envelope that enables better control of temperature and ventilation.
  • Discuss how air barrier membranes can improve building energy efficiency and longevity by creating a continuous weather barrier and allowing for movement without compromising the air tightness of the building.
  • List the six basic elements of fire safety provisions in building construction and discuss the four major industry standards applicable to the fire testing of exterior wall materials and assemblies.
  • Detail draft specification language for fire-resistant air barrier membranes and wall assemblies that comply with fire safety provisions of IBC to protect occupants from fire and smoke inhalation.

Approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes. Delivered online, at your own pace.
