Typically specified for pavements because of its strength, durability, and life-cycle value, concrete is increasingly being specified for a variety of exterior and interior projects because of its aesthetic potential. This course explores colored concrete including coloring methods, pigments, color consistency, and maintenance. It examines the specification considerations of cast-in-place and precast concrete and looks at a range of interior applications and concrete finishes.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- List common methods used for coloring concrete, outlining their benefits and drawbacks, installation methods, and suitable applications.
- Identify the raw materials of colored concrete and explain how each component influences the final appearance.
- Describe the various applications for cast-in-place and precast colored concrete and their specification considerations related to weather, mixing, subgrade, forms and reinforcement, placing, finishing, curing, and cleaning.
- Summarize some of the methods used for finishing colored concrete and list measures to take to avoid the aesthetic issues associated with efflorescence and erosion.

Background: Nick Paris is Vice President of Marketing for Davis Colors, a brand of Rockwood Pigments. Mr. Paris has been involved in the marketing of color pigments into the US construction industry since 1986 with specific emphasis on cast-in-place and architectural applications. Mr. Paris co-developed the Chameleon computerized color dosing system for concrete batching and mixing operations. Mr. Paris has a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from University of Southern California.
