Lockers: Trends in School Security, Learning, and Technology

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

North American school boards are divided between those that do and do not provide lockers to their students. This difference of opinion has arisen from trends in school security, funding cuts, declining locker use, antibullying policies, back health, and informal learning. Pro- and antilocker advocates present valid but sometimes contradictory concerns. There is a third option: nonassigned lockers. This course discusses the functional and economic rationale for nonassigned lockers, gives an overview of electronic access control systems, and reviews locker construction.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss how personal locker use in schools impacts student mental and physical health, academic performance, and discipline issues.
  • Describe how a nonassigned locker strategy addresses school board concerns such as security, liability for backpack-related staff/student injury, reduced maintenance/administrative costs, and space constraints.
  • List the features and security benefits of electronic locker access control systems.
  • Describe the five categories of locker construction, relate them to desired performance levels and life cycle costs, and specify lockers that function for the life of the school instead of creating demolition waste from repeated locker replacement.

Approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. Delivered online, at your own pace.
