The variety of paint products offered can be overwhelming. And with each variety of paint offering different properties that affect the outcome of a project, understanding what is in a can of paint is key to success. Reviewed in this course are the types of architectural paint, the components of paint, and proper surface preparation, as well as the causes of and solutions to common paint problems ranging from simple to complex.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Contrast the characteristics, applications, pros, and cons of the two most common paint types.
- Describe the four basic components of paint and their impact on paint quality and performance.
- State the proper surface preparation for painting of various substrates, including drywall, wood, galvanized metal, and plaster.
- Review the causes of and solutions to simple, moderate, and complex paint problems.

Background: Dominika Bandyk is the Manager of Architectural and Designer Services for Dunn-Edwards Paints. She has spent the last 16 years in the design industry, receiving a bachelor's degree of art in interior design from the Design Institute of San Diego. Her passion for architecture, design, and sustainability brought her to Dunn-Edwards, where she has held many positions over the last seven years in both store operations and sales. Dominika is currently responsible for leading the Architectural and Design Team in the southwestern United States. She is an industry member of ASID.
