American West Historical Color and Architecture: Spanish Colonial to Spanish Revival 1650s–1900s

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

The 19th and 20th centuries brought numerous opportunities to revive classic architectural styles and—in the American West—the architecture and colors of the California missions, adobes, and Monterey Colonial homes provided unique and beautiful examples to support the new Mission Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Monterey Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Pueblo Revival styles. This course explores local design and the architecture and color of historic buildings in the Southwest to show how it’s possible to establish color schemes representative of the American Western culture.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss how and why the Spanish Colonial era had a great influence on the architecture and colors of the American West by examining the pioneering landscape and religion of the era.
  • Recognize how architectural historians can establish color schemes representative of a culture through paint research and historic color analysis.
  • Identify Spanish Colonial era design terms and paint colors by examining the interior and exterior of heritage buildings in the Southwest.
  • Identify the colors and architectural features of the Revival styles of the 19th and 20th centuries to illustrate why many of the towns in the Southwest today still showcase styles that are historically identifiable.
