The concept of solar lighting is elegantly simple, but in practice, a long list of component and environmental variables creates the potential for a wide range of outcomes. Designers are often surprised by the number of questions suppliers ask about projects before suggesting solutions. This course explains the basics of solar lighting systems, the potential of solar lighting, and which variables impact performance, maintenance, and reliability. Job specifications and project proposals are discussed, as are relevant questions that should be asked during the design phase.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain the components of a stand-alone solar lighting system.
- List the installation complications that stand-alone lighting systems can avoid, including soil, root, and mature landscape preservation.
- Discuss the variables that impact the performance of solar lighting, including energy efficiency and battery storage.
- Identify system design best practices, including uniformity, light pollution avoidance, and consideration of circadian rhythms and wildlife.
- Recall relevant questions that should be asked during the design phase to ensure complete comprehension of the job specifications and client objectives.
