Coatings for Steel Railing & Fence Systems

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Selection of a material for a railing or fence project requires considering its long-term performance, maintenance, cost, and aesthetics. Regardless of the railing application (commercial, residential, or industrial), the coating process makes a difference to the life of the project. This course evaluates the different coating technologies available for steel railing and fence systems and discusses the factors to consider when selecting a coating for a steel railing and fence system.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the chemical and mechanical properties of steel and the environmental impact of its recyclability and recycled content.
  • Compare different steel pretreatment and coating processes in terms of their waste reduction, durability, energy efficiency, and environmental impact, and examine how they may impact the longevity of a railing or fence system.
  • List the testing standards and specification for coatings on railing and fence systems that ensure durability, color retention, and hardness, leading to a long-lasting coating.
  • Discuss the factors to consider when selecting a coating for a railing or fence system to ensure it meets the environmental conditions and performance demands of the project.
