Specifying Levels of Finish for Gypsum Wallboard

Provides an overview of gypsum wallboard manufacturing, a review of the Gypsum Association's recommended levels of finish and examples of writing specification of levels of finish.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Define what is gypsum and depict how gypsum wallboard is manufactured.
  • Compare the characteristics of paper faced gypsum board and glass-mat gypsum board with respect to their durability, strength, fire resistance, and protection against mold growth.
  • List and describe the recommended levels of gypsum board finish in terms of their appearance, application, and ability to achieve specific aesthetics.
  • Write a complete specification for levels of gypsum board finish using the guidelines outlined in the Recommended Levels of Gypsum Board Finish document.
  • Identify different types of joint treatment products to determine whether they are formulated for use in fire-resistive assemblies, intended for use as interior ceiling or wall textures, or for use as outdoor repair compounds in various weather conditions.
  • Contrast the features of the various types of paint sheen and explain their effect on the final appearance of the installation.
