Composite Aluminum/Wood Windows for Thermal and Structural Performance (Replaced)

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Composite aluminum/wood windows (not aluminum clad wood windows) combine the beauty and warmth of wood with the strength, weather resistance, and durability of finished extruded aluminum. This course explores the unique design capabilities of composite aluminum/wood windows and explains how their technical features, design elements, and hinge operating system contribute to their high structural strength, water management, and thermal performance.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between aluminum clad wood windows and composite aluminum/wood windows in terms of their components, construction, and performance.
  • Discuss why a composite aluminum/wood window has a high structural strength that meets the structural requirements for a large operable window in a high rise building.
  • Explain why a composite aluminum/wood window with a managed drainage system may achieve high performance ratings for air infiltration, and water penetration.
  • Explain how the type of glazing system selected for a window assembly may impact the indoor environment, occupant comfort, and energy demand.
  • Describe the operation of a projecting hinge that allows a composite aluminum/wood window to fully reverse and how its design contributes to the air infiltration and thermal resistance of the assembly.
  • Identify the testing standards and evaluations for aluminum windows as defined by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA).
  • Discuss composite aluminum/wood windows in terms of their environmental impact.
