Vinyl is one of the most popular types of plastic because of its durability and cost-effectiveness. However, the safety and sustainability of vinyl often comes into question. This course discusses the human and environmental impacts of vinyl, sustainable corporate strategies, and product transparency.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Answer questions concerning what vinyl is, how it is manufactured, and the common additives used to enhance performance.
- Explain the environmental and human impacts of LVT flooring.
- Discuss corporate governance and the importance of incorporating sustainability into a corporate strategy.
- Recognize the differences between Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Health Product Declarations (HPDs), Product Transparency Declarations (PTDs), and NSF/ANSI 332: Sustainability Assessment for Resilient Floor Coverings.
- Summarize how LVT flooring may contribute to points earned under the LEED® green building certification program, and the Green Globes green building rating and certification tool.

Background: Mr. Carter serves as the Director of Safety & Sustainability for Metroflor. In this role, Mr. Carter is responsible for many initiatives undertaken by his company on a global scale. These include, but are not limited to, NSF/ANSI 332 Certifications, product ingredient safety and supply chain management, FloorScore certifications, and recycling efforts. In addition, Mr. Carter is involved in numerous trade organizations including the Resilient Floor Covering Institute and the Vinyl Institute. Mr. Carter regularly attends industry related trade shows, conferences and seminars to stay up to date on industry issues and trends.
