Designing with Spray Foam Insulation

To fully assess the benefits of spray foam and its importance to today’s building industry requires taking a closer look at one of the main goals of architects and building engineers—to create sustainable structures that allow maximum design creativity. With an ability to contour into any space or shape and adhere to any surface, spray foam allows such creativity. This course examines the performance properties of spray foam products and discusses advanced design concepts using spray foam.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the characteristics of open-cell and closed-cell spray foam, and explain the benefits of spray foam insulation over traditional insulation product.
  • Discuss how spray foam can protect the health and comfort of building occupants by improving indoor air quality, limiting the potential for mold and mildew, and providing sound attenuation, dust reduction, and moisture control.
  • Identify the features of spray foam that make it suitable for conditioned attic assemblies and exterior wall assemblies.
  • Explain the impact of spray foam on a building’s energy performance and HVAC sizing by assessing its ability to limit moisture movement and protect the thermal envelope.
  • Explain the requirements of spray foam insulation within today’s building codes, and demonstrate how a spray foam can exceed fire safety and specified thermal performance goals.
  • Create advanced designs using spray foam on both the interior and exterior to meet the demands of a high-performance, sustainable structure.
