Waterproofing Design and Application Procedures
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
Moisture infiltration through a building envelope can cause widespread damage to building elements and construction materials. In some cases, it can threaten or destroy a building’s structural integrity. The components of today’s waterproofing systems for above- and below-grade floors and walls or plaza decks are designed to work together to provide tight, durable, and complete protection against not just water but also all other environmental contaminants. This course discusses the fundamentals of waterproofing design, the types of materials used, and the considerations for selecting a waterproofing system to meet the requirements of a building project.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Define the terms dampproofing and waterproofing and explain why dampproofing cannot be substituted for waterproofing.
- Demonstrate why waterproofing is critical to the durability and integrity of a building envelope and the service life of a building.
- Identify various types of waterproofing materials and systems, describe their physical and performance properties and limitations, and explain how and where they can be installed.
- Discuss waterproofing system selection considerations and recognize the importance of selecting a system based on the requirements of the building project.
- Discuss the fundamentals of waterproofing design, including the investigation, planning, installation, detailing, and post-construction phases.
