When to Use Storefront or Curtain Wall Construction

Using a storefront system for an application where a curtain wall should be can lead to many problems. This presentation reviews the performance and structural considerations that might lead to choosing a curtain wall over a storefront system and vice versa, and discusses how design intent and certain design features will drive system selection. System fabrication and installation, and water management, are also discussed.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Describe what a storefront system is and how it is best utilized in a commercial project.
- Describe what a curtain wall is and how it is best utilized in a commercial project.
- Identify the main drivers that must be considered when deciding between a storefront system or curtain wall for specific applications.
- Discuss the consequences of selecting the wrong system.

Background: Henry R. Taylor was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia where he earned his undergraduate degree in Marketing and English from Georgia State University and his MBA in Management from Kennesaw State University. He began his professional career in commercial construction working for a commercial developer/builder in the Atlanta area. Taylor has been with Kawneer for more than 17 years and currently serves as Architectural Services Team Manager, where his responsibilities include assisting architects during project development to select the appropriate Kawneer systems, specifying the system and gathering project details. He brings more than 20 years of experience in glass and glazing to his position, with previous roles ranging from working for a glazing subcontractor to working with a major glass fabricator. Additionally, Taylor has held several positions within the Kawneer Company as an Architectural Representative; Field Sales Representative; and Product Manager for the Kawneer/Forster Partnership. Taylor is a regular speaker at industry and trade association meetings and has several articles published in trade publications. Taylor also currently serves as Chairman of the largest Division 8 trade organization, BEC (Building Envelope Contractor’s) Committee.
