Firestop Systems for Maintaining Fire Ratings of Walls and Floors (Removed)

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Unprotected openings resulting from the installation of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems represent a breach of the fire resistive floor or wall assemblies. This course examines firestop systems used for maintaining or regaining the fire resistance rating of a fire separation, and includes discussions on testing standards, fire classified floor boxes, poke-thru devices, and through-wall penetration systems.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recognize the need for a firestop system and list the UL and ASTM Standards to which fire stopping systems are tested and certified.
  • Define fire rated floor and list current practices used to treat voids that can impact the fire classification of the floor.
  • List the various components and benefits of fire classified floor boxes.
  • Describe through-wall penetration systems and poke-thru devices in terms of how fire protection is achieved through the use of a fire stopping intumescent material.
  • Specify wire and cable management solutions to fulfill the requirements for in-floor and through-wall applications that maintain the fire ratings of such applications.
