Sustainability seeks to balance resource efficiency, health, and social concerns throughout the life cycle of a structure. Concrete has a variety of benefits to offer in achieving this goal. This course examines the environmental impacts of building with concrete along with a discussion of the features of reflective and decorative concrete floors and their role in a sustainable building strategy. As well, we present a review of the best practices and specification considerations that are required to facilitate a successful concrete floor installation.

Background: Larry Rowland is an accomplished educator and published author with more than 25 years experience in the material supply and construction industries. He is an industry leader on the topic of Architectural and Decorative Concrete and Sustainability. He serves as Chair of the American Concrete Institute’s Decorative Concrete and Plastering Committees and is the former Secretary of Sustainability of Concrete Committee. Larry is a Certified Construction Product Representative with the Construction Specifications Institute and has served in numerous capacities with the Concrete Joint Sustainability Initiative, the Portland Cement Association, and the Architectural Precast Concrete Association.
Larry has been a USGBC, LEED Accredited Professional since 2004. He is a former Director of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, his region’s chapter of the USGBC, and served as Chair of the DVGBC’s Lehigh Valley Branch. He regularly speaks professionally to Architects, Engineers, Students, and Green Building Professionals on the topic of High Performance Concrete and Concrete Sustainability. He also maintains professional affiliation with the American Concrete Institute; Chair Decorative Concrete and Plastering Committees, the Architectural Precast Concrete Association; Chair Sustainability Committee, the Portland Cement Association; Chair, Decorative / White Cement Committee, the Construction Specifications Institute - Certified Construction Product Representative, and the Concrete Joint Sustainability Initiative; Resilience Task Group Leader.
