Insulated Metal Wall and Roof Panels: Sustainable and Energy Efficient

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Insulated metal panels (IMPs) provide a sustainable and energy-efficient insulation option for architects and building owners. These lightweight, durable, easy-to-install panels are an all-in-one product acting as insulation as well as an air and vapor barrier. This course explains how IMPs are an effective thermal barrier and discusses their application in new and retrofit construction. The performance criteria of IMPs are examined relative to current green building rating systems, and various case studies are discussed.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain how IMPs lower building energy costs, prevent air and moisture intrusion, and improve the thermal comfort of occupants.
  • Compare the insulating values of IMPs to traditional systems and illustrate how IMPs reduce the carbon footprint of a building.
  • Analyze the sustainability and performance criteria of IMPs relative to contributing to credits under today’s green building rating programs.
  • Discuss how IMPs serve as walls, ceilings, and roofs in new and retrofit construction, and how they can be easily adapted to pre-engineered metal building designs.
  • Differentiate various types of IMPs based on their performance attributes and aesthetics.
