The importance of handwashing in regard to personal health is well understood, and most people feel they know how to do it properly. However, the places where and methods by which hands are washed are not always as healthy and safe as they should or appear to be. This course outlines the proper handwashing techniques, especially for healthcare and food preparation contexts; explains how germs, viruses, and bacteria are spread and where sanitation problems with sinks may reside; and describes how to select and specify the most appropriate washup, infection prevention, and scrub sinks, countertops, and fitments.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Identify and eliminate places where bacteria and mold may grow in sinks when designing healthcare facilities.
- Specify the safest and most appropriate sink design for healthcare and food preparation facilities.
- Select those features of a sink that make it the most effective in infection spread prevention.
- Design and locate customized flexible healthcare units where they are the most effective in preventing infection spread in healthcare facilities.

Background: Kristin Kahle has worked in the commercial plumbing industry for 20 years. In 1998, she started the luxury plumbing brand Neo-Metro, which specializes in durable commercial and correctional fittings, from the parent company Acorn Engineering Company (now named Morris Group International). Kristin’s experience in the plumbing industry and extensive knowledge of the hospitality, architecture, and design markets combined to create Neo-Metro’s line of fully customizable plumbing fixtures constructed from durable materials like stainless steel and cast solid surface. She took this knowledge into the healthcare industry with Whitehall. Ms. Kahle currently runs two divisions for Morris Group International: Whitehall Manufacturing and Neo-Metro.
