Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Define sealants in general, what to look for in a sealant, and what basic types of sealants exist.
- Explain what silicone and silicone-modified sealants are, where they are used, and their basic characteristics.
- Describe silicone sealants chemistry, raw materials used in their production, one-part and two-part silicone sealant components, and how the silicone sealants are cured.
- Recall how silicone sealants are selected, the primary and secondary criteria for selection, and what the areas of application in the construction industry are and
summarize how silicone sealants are installed, and what items need to be addressed during installation.

Name: Brian Chambers
Title: Director or Research and Development, Novagard Solutions
Background: Brian Chambers earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kalamazoo College nearly a thousand years ago. Currently the Director of Research & Development at Novagard Solutions, he has worked in all aspects of polymer product development with chemistry types ranging from epoxy to silicone and cure mechanisms varied from two-component to UV cure. Over the course of the past thirty years as a development chemist, he formulated a multitude of products for the construction industry including sealants, adhesives and coatings. In the labs at Novagard for eighteen (18) years, he continues to develop and routinely test, construction grade materials based on silicone polymers.
