Fireplaces have long been a centerpiece in the home. This course presents an introduction to the types of gas fireplaces and vents, and covers the applicable code and standards for direct-vent, factory-built gas fireplaces. Also included are discussions on the protective safety barrier requirements, test methods for fireplace efficiency, and typical steps for installing direct-vent gas fireplaces and barriers.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Compare and contrast the types of gas fireplaces and their venting options, including which to specify depending on location and project specifics.
- Summarize the portions of the International Residential Code and International Fuel Gas Code and the UL and ANSI/CSA standards that are applicable to direct-vent gas fireplaces.
- Discuss the protective safety barrier requirements of ANSI Z21.88-2014/CSA 2.33-2014 and describe two barrier options.
- Explain why efficiency ratings may differ and the benefits of the CSA P.4.1 test method.
- List the typical installation steps for a direct-vent gas fireplace with barriers to ensure safety and proper functioning of the product.
