Stairs are an essential component of a movement and wayfinding strategy in a structure and a primary means of egress, exit, and floor-to-floor access in the event of a fire or emergency for buildings with multiple floors or a change in rise. This course discusses stair and egress system design and evaluates why the design and fabrication of pre-engineered steel stairs create safe stair environments that comply with building codes.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the benefits of the preassembled metal stair design and fabrication process and show how it ensures a safe, efficient, and durable stairway installation.
  • Discuss the importance of designing safe and code-compliant stairs by identifying the safety and dimension details to be addressed and building code requirements.
  • Identify the potential hazards of stair design to building occupants and discuss key performance requirements of the stairway and its components.
  • Summarize how metal stairs are classified according to type and class.
  • Discuss basics of egress system design and the sizing of stairs to ensure occupants can escape a building safely.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
