Pattern Mapping for Lasting Design

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

A Pattern Map evaluates a pattern on two key elements: structure and nature. This course explains why these two elements affect how we recognize and respond to pattern and examines ways to bridge architecture and nature by using architectural panel systems with patterned openings, and provide a sense of space, privacy, shade, or camouflage with cladding, screens, or railings.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Evaluate and compare patterns on a Pattern Map and explain how different characteristics of a pattern can affect the function, aesthetics, and feel of a space.
  • Recognize how patterned panels integrate biophilic design by drawing upon natural patterns that allow people to feel a connection to nature, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • Explain why shading and screening through thoughtful design in the built environment is an effective means of reducing energy usage.
  • Discuss best practices in using pattern to filter light and frame a space to create environments that promote emotional wellness and physical recovery.
  • Select the openness factor, engineering, and base material for an architectural patterned panel system to suit a project's design objectives for shade, privacy, wayfinding, safety, and social well-being.
