Designing with Architectural Precast Concrete: Innovative Solutions That Transform Creative Designs into Elegant Structures
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
Over time, different types of concrete have been developed for a variety of architectural applications, including cast stone, precast panels and shapes, glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). These concrete forms differ in physical properties, applications, and cost. This course reviews the four essential types of architectural precast including their composition, functions, advantages, and specifications to facilitate the proper selection based on project requirements.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Describe the applications and constituents of architectural precast concrete that produce products that offer strength, durability, and design flexibility.
- Define the performance requirements of various architectural precast concrete products and the plant certifications that verify the manufacturing facility meets these requirements for production practices and quality.
- Explain the design advantages of GFRC, the utilization of glass fibers in the mix design, and how they allow products to be manufactured with thin walls without the necessity of reinforcing bars.
- State the strength and durability properties of UHPC, its application to perforated panels, and its improvement over GFRC as a form of thin-wall architectural precast.
