Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain why using real hardwood in a building project is a sustainable choice throughout all the stages of the product’s life cycle.
- Describe and compare three types of flooring in terms of their characteristics and specify sustainable flooring based upon these comparisons.
- Explain the material and resource efficiency of engineered wood flooring and discuss the ways in which this flooring can meet the standards set by green building organizations.
- Discuss on-site and factory finishing methods; list the benefits and downfalls of each; and state how factory finishing can help earn LEED® points on a project.
- Describe some organizations and programs that promote sustainability and responsible forestry practices.

Name: Jeff Smith
Title: General Manager, Colonial Craft
Background: Jeff Smith brings more than 15 years experience to his role as General Manager for Colonial Craft of Luck, Wisconsin, and Owens Flooring by Colonial Craft. He is responsible for overseeing the manufacturing and sales operations of wood components, moldings and engineered flooring products. Prior to serving as General Manager, Smith held positions in marketing research and operations for Homeshield where he specialized in developing new markets, assisted with product development and managed production and engineering of architectural moldings, extension jambs, window components and window grilles.
Jeff Smith has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. His professional experience includes serving as President of ANP Dimensional Lumber where he was responsible for capital management, production and sales of the wood blind and shutter component business. Smith is a member of the Wood Component Manufacturers Association (WCMA) and the National Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association (NWFA).
